CANCELLED-Local, Healthy, Sustainable Food Systems: Hyperbole or Sensation?

Mark Kastel of the Cornucopia Institute will be unable to give a scheduled talk this evening, March 8, 2012, at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. This event has been cancelled, due to illness.

For the third consecutive year, Bloomingfoods is hosting a Food Co-op Start Up conference in early March, 2012. Called "Up and Coming, Up and Running", the conference is designed to help those who are involved with starting or maintaining food co-ops in their communities. The conference includes Kastel’s presentation - “Local, Healthy, Sustainable Food Systems: Hyperbole or Sensation?” Founder of the Cornucopia Institute, a watch dog organization that promotes and supports organic and sustainable farming, Kastel will talk about how the food choices we make impact our health, our environment, and the economic vitality of our region. This event is free and open to the public.

Save the date for the Local Grower's Guild Winter Gathering!

This year we will offer another dynamic series of workshops. Throughout the day, professional and backyard growers can participate in discussions and lectures, learn new skills & techniques, as well as network with their fellow gardeners and small farmers.The 2012 WGG topics will include: eating & cooking with wild crafted ingredients, fruit tree planting & care, urban agriculture methods, diverse livestock management, beekeeping, composting, an update about the Indiana New Farm School, and a discussion about aggregating products for a viable local distribution system. Each session will be led by local experts. Stay tuned to our website for a more information and a detailed schedule of the event's workshops/discussions coming soon!

Winter Guild Gathering tickets are available on the LGG website via paypal (http://www.localgrowers.org), at the Bloomington Winter Farmers Market (at the LIFE Farm stand) and at all Bloomingfoods locations. Tickets cost $20 for LGG members and $25 for non-members. A home cooked lunch prepared with local ingredients is included in ticket price. If you buy your tickets before January 15th, you can save five dollars (that's $15 for members, $20 for non-members)!

Once again, the Winter Guild Gathering will run simultaneous to the Bloomington Winter Farmers Market, during the morning hours. We will provide plenty of time between lectures to allow you to shop! If attending the Winter Guild Gathering, we ask that you reserve the Harmony parking lot for the market shoppers. There is ample (and free) street and garage parking available.

The Food Revolution: Elitist or Essential?

"The Food Revolution: Elitist or Essential?" a panel discussion. Is the local food movement an elitist phenomenon? How is our community helping low income citizens gain access to healthy local food? What are the barriers and what more can be done? Join panelists Julio Alonso of the Hoosier Hills Food Bank, Marcia Veldman of the Bloomington Community Farmers Market, Tim Clougher of Community Kitchen, Stephanie Solomon of Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, and Brandi Smith formerly of the Hoosier Hills Food Bank Garden Program and former emergency assistance recipient for a discussion about access to local food for low income citizens in the Bloomington area. Prepared questions surrounding issues regarding the availability of local food in the regional area will be addressed, along with time for public Q&A.

Big Red Eats Green: A Festival Celebrating Local Food

Co-sponsored by Indiana University, the Indiana Memorial Union, IU’s Office of Sustainability, and Slow Food Bloomington, the festival will offer attendees opportunities to sample a variety of foods prepared by local restaurants that support local farms and food producers, including BLU Boy Chocolate Café and Cakery, Bloomingfoods, Dunn Meadow Café, Feast, Finch’s Brasserie, Happy Pig, Laughing Planet, Lennie’s, Nick’s English Hut, Pizza X, Restaurant Tallent, and Upland Brewing Company. Food selections emphasize ingredients that are in season and locally grown and will cost $1, $2, or $3. Campus and community groups will be present to offer information on their missions, including Bloomington Food Policy Council, Hoosier Hills Food Bank, IU Food Studies, IU Office of Sustainability, Local Growers Guild, and Slow Food IU. “America’s Food System: A Cause for Concern, a Time for Action,” a free talk by Mark Winne of the National Food Security Coalition, author of Food Rebels, Guerrilla Gardeners, and Smart-Cookin' Mamas: Fighting Back in an Age of Industrial Agriculture and Closing the Food Gap: Resetting the Table in the Land of Plenty, in the Duke Energy Room of the Bloomington Monroe County Convention Center. Boxcar Books will host a sale of Mark Winne’s books and a book signing by the author at the event.

Urban Agriculture Tour

Join our free Urban Agriculture Tour to find out what three homeowners in Bloomington are doing to produce food for themselves and our community. Sponsored by Bloomington Commission on Sustainability, the tour will meet in the upper parking lot at the YMCA at 2125 S. Highland Ave. From there we will take a bus to Ann Kreilkamp's neighborhood garden, Dave Parkhurst's permaculture garden and Nathan Harmon's urban farm, ending at the Bloomington Community Orchard. Please bring water and a hat. Although the tour is free, we ask that participants preregister by emailingUrbanAgTour@gmail.com. Site descriptions are below.

Ann Kreilkamp's garden:
The Green Acres Neighborhood Garden, started by Ann Kreilkamp in the yard of a house which she owns next door to her own home in 2009, is worked by volunteers from the neighborhood, who are then welcome to harvest its vegetable bounty. The garden has been the site for numerous permaculture workshops on various aspects of food production, as well as a demonstration site for Melissa Clark's SPEA classes in sustainability.

Dave Parkhurst's garden:
My operation lies at the “small” end of urban agriculture, being a 25x40 foot garden with a variety of vegetables. Special features include raised beds to deal with drainage problems in my heavy clay soil, and a drip irrigation system fed from a thousand-gallon tank that fills from roof runoff. Yields are more than sufficient for us, and the surplus goes to Mother Hubbard's Cupboard.

Nathan Harmon's farm:
We have a fairly big fenced polyculture garden, a 45 tree orchard, and a shiitake mushroom building I'd like to show, in addition to compost systems, a cob oven, and a little slip-straw cottage which always elicit a lot of interest.

The Bloomington Community Orchard:
Bloomington Community Orchard is an organization devoted to growing fruit for the community to share and enjoy. The publicly owned orchard is maintained entirely by volunteers and the harvest is available to everyone in the community.
